Nigra Sum sed Formosa!
(2000)
Commissioned by the Shenandoah Conservatory Choir, Robert Shafer, conductor, for its 1999 European Tour of Germany, Austria, and the Czech Republic. The piece was originally composed for two sopranos and organ, with the canonic nature the singer’s parts meant to emulate and be enhanced by the reverberation and echo of the churches in which they sang. After the tour, the optional choir and string quartet parts were added. The instrumentation is flexible: it may be performed as originally written, for two sopranos and organ; or with the addition of either the choir or the string quartet, or both.
